A tourist mecca
The Citadel, best known as "Usinéjou" in Mutsamudu is renovated. This landmark in the history of the island which has long been in ruins, just found a new life. The citadel, royal palace, was built in August 1791 by Abdallah I Almaceli immediately after the transfer of the Capital from Domoni to Mutsamudu. Its construction was entirely completed in 1801. This fortress is situated above the medina of Mutsamudu, overlooks the wide bay. It reflects the rich cultural heritage of the sultanates. Rehabilitated, the citadel is now a major tourist asset for the city.
